Emotional Intelligence, which is the ability to identify and manage our own emotions, requires self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy.
These same abilities are required for intuitive awareness. The development of intuitive perception and the development of emotional intelligence go arm in arm. Intuitive skills which help us perceive mental and emotional material about ourselves or others, can provide a direct and useful approach to understanding and managing emotions.
Often we are encouraged to think logically and rationally and sweep emotions under the carpet. But emotions hiding under the carpet will trip us up when we least expect it. Besides, we need emotions for assessing the environment and for making good decisions.
Emotional intelligence does not deny emotions but it does regulate them. For example, fear is not always to be avoided. Healthy fear gives a signal that we need to pay attention. It is not always alarming. It can cause us to look both ways before crossing the street, or to lock the door.
Anger; a sign that a boundary was violated, does not require an emotional outburst. It could just be the motivation we need to reinforce boundaries and avoid unhealthy relationships.
Sadness tells us to let go of the energy of an old experience. Joy creeps in when we are in harmony with the world. Love is ever-present; underlying other emotional flows and available when we have felt the emotion and let it go.
The way to regulate emotions is to feel them, receive their messages, and let them do their work. Intuitive practices for understanding and managing energy are very helpful in regulating emotions and as little as one practice session can improve emotional intelligence.
